Golden Silvers "Arrows of Eros" ( XL . Rec)


  • The mise-en-scene in the opening shot is of all three of the band members slowly turning to face the camera, within individual purple boxes. The use of the separate boxes shows that each band member should be regarded as an individual while the use of the universal colour of these boxes shows that they are part of a collective therefor showing some of their band identity.
  • The next three shots are close up shots of instruments being played, with only the hands of the artists visible. This indicates that the band pride themselves off the ability to play the drums, guitar and keyboard and makes it a key part of the music video.
  • The screen is then divided into 3 sections, with the lead singer in the central part of the screen. This creates a focal point on him and shows that he is the main voice and face of the bands identity.
  • There are a range of shots included within the video. The main one used is the head to shoulder shot but there is also use of : waist up, close range shots of the instruments being played, head shots and body shots of instruments being played.
  • There is use of visual editing included where the artist's eyes spiral in rainbow colours, where a brain is edited over the artists head of hair, when the lead singer says "behold his golden wings", a large pair of wings appear around him with many more instances of visual art edited in. This gives the band a quirky and artistic side to their identity as well as being quite unique and different.

KERRANGE! Article (specialist music mag) In this double page spread featuring H.I.M we see the clever choice of colour to attract an audience. The bright font colour puts focus on the artist's name and the white contrasted onto the dark black causes the text stand out. The use of the quotation makes us feel relate to the artist as we get a glimpse into their opinions and feelings. In this instance, the quotation "we felt like we didn't have a home" helps us to develop an emotive relationship with the artist as he is exposing a vulnerable side to himself. The design and layout choice of the second page featuring almost entirely an image of the artist is clever done as it means we do not disassociate the words with his identity. The use of the lexis "Remember me?" leads to the assumption that we are already familiar with H.I.M and they are making a comeback to the the music scene. Jack Penate 'Pull My Heart Away" (XL. Rec) The opening shot is a scenic shot of a desert like environment with mountains and the moon against a blue sky. The camera then zooms into the moon and the camera handling is shaky and it could be assumed that the artist is holding the camera, making it seem candid. From the use of the moon and scenery we can get the identity that the artist is quite into the elements and nature. The shot of the moon then fades out into a glass ball, giving a sense of enigma and mystery to the video. There are a range of shots used. from extreme close ups of the artist's eye to full body pan shots of the artist travelling through the desert scenery.
